My Weekly Whole Food Grocery Staples

Weekly Fridge & Produce Staples

A stocked pantry is wonderful, but it’s the fresh ingredients that truly bring a kitchen to life.

Each week, I like to keep our refrigerator filled with simple, nourishing foods that can be mixed and matched into countless meals. I don’t believe every meal has to be complicated. In fact, some of our favorites come from just a handful of quality ingredients that can be thrown together quickly on busy nights.

These are the fresh staples you’ll almost always find in our kitchen.

Grass-Fed Butter

Butter is one ingredient I never want to run out of.

We use it for everything from cooking eggs and roasting vegetables to spreading on warm sourdough fresh from the oven. Good-quality grass-fed butter adds so much flavor to simple meals.

Seasonal Fruit & Berries

One of my favorite ways to eat is with the seasons.

Whether it’s strawberries in the spring, cherries in the summer, apples in the fall, or citrus during the winter, seasonal fruit is usually more flavorful and often more affordable, too.

Fresh berries are always welcome in our refrigerator for breakfast, snacks, and desserts. We eat them up like candy!

Apples & Bananas

If I need a quick snack, it’s almost always an apple or banana.

They’re simple, easy to grab on busy days, and even better paired with homemade peanut butter. It’s one of those timeless combinations that never gets old.

Raw Cheese

We always keep a block (or two!) of raw cheese in the refrigerator. If raw isn’t your thing, Organic Valley has a great selection of pasteurized cheeses from a trustworthy source.

One of my favorite kitchen tips is to buy blocks of cheese and shred them yourself. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents and preservatives to keep it from clumping together. Freshly shredded cheese melts better, tastes better, and only takes a few extra minutes.

Whole Milk

Whole milk is one of those versatile staples that always earns its place in our fridge.

Not only is it the best milk option for my salted maple latte’s every morning, we also use it in baking, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, homemade sauces, smoothies, and alongside warm cookies fresh from the oven.

Farm Fresh Eggs

If there’s one ingredient I could build an entire week’s worth of meals around, it would probably be eggs.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, baking, snacks! I mean you really can’t go wrong. Farm fresh eggs have beautiful golden yolks and incredible flavor that makes even the simplest meal feel special.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is one of our favorite high-protein staples.

Our favorite is Painterland Sisters. We enjoy it with berries, homemade granola, a drizzle of local honey, or blended into smoothies. It also works beautifully in baking and as a substitute for sour cream in many recipes.

Heavy Cream

Heavy cream is one of those little luxuries I always keep on hand. Again, Organic Valley is a wonderful brand for quality heavy cream.

It turns soups into comfort food, makes the creamiest mashed potatoes, creates rich pasta sauces, and whips into the easiest homemade whipped cream. If you’re feeling a little extra you can make your own cold foam too for your latte’s!

Fresh Herbs from the Garden

Nothing compares to walking outside and snipping fresh herbs for dinner.

Whether it’s basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary, or chives, fresh herbs instantly brighten a meal and make even simple recipes feel elevated. If you have space, even a few pots on a porch or windowsill are worth it.

Whole-Food, Versatile Proteins

Instead of buying lots of different proteins each week, we stick with a handful that work in dozens of recipes.

Some of our favorites include:

  • Ancestral ground beef (we love Force of Nature)
  • Ribeye steaks
  • Chicken thighs
  • Salmon
  • Bison

These proteins can become everything from tacos and burgers to soups, sheet pan dinners, pasta dishes, grain bowls, and grilled meals.

Avocados

Avocados seem to find their way into almost every meal.

They’re delicious sliced on sourdough toast, added to salads, mashed into guacamole, or served alongside grilled meat and roasted vegetables.

Seasonal Vegetables

Just like fruit, we try to buy vegetables that are in season whenever possible.

Our favorites change throughout the year, but you’ll usually find things like cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, squash, or asparagus depending on the season. (Can it be Brussels sprouts season all year round?)

Keeping a variety of vegetables on hand makes it much easier to build balanced meals throughout the week.

Fresh Garlic

Fresh garlic belongs in almost everything.

It’s one of the simplest ways to add incredible flavor to homemade cooking. I always keep several bulbs in the pantry because somehow garlic disappears faster than I expect.

Kombucha

We also love keeping kombucha in the refrigerator.

It’s one of our favorite refreshing drinks to enjoy with lunch or dinner, especially on warm afternoons. Having something fun to sip makes it easier to reach for nourishing options instead of sugary drinks.

Simple Ingredients, Endless Meals

I’ve learned that a well-stocked refrigerator doesn’t need to be overflowing to be useful.

A handful of quality ingredients can become breakfasts around the table, quick weekday lunches, cozy dinners, and homemade desserts without requiring a complicated grocery list.

Start with simple, versatile foods you truly enjoy eating. Build your meals around seasonal produce, quality proteins, and nourishing staples, and you’ll be surprised how easy cooking from scratch becomes.
